10 questions we should all be asking designers

I’ve been hiring people for almost 20 years. These are some questions I think we should ask more often:

  1. What grinds your gears in the design industry?
  2. Tell me about a time when you had to give difficult feedback someone
  3. Tell me about a time when you encountered an ethically murky situation. What did you do or avoided?
  4. Are you a detail oriented person or a big picture person? How do you deal with working with someone who is the opposite?
  5. What made you quit your last job?
  6. How do you bounce back from negative feedback?
  7. What is the hill you will die on?
  8. What do you need to see your boss’s boss’s boss do to feel confident in your work environment?
  9. What do you need to hear from your line manager to feel heard?
  10. On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is being a designer to your sense of self?
