Open Sauces toast

November 23, 2008

I had the extreme pleasure of attending Open Sauces in Bruxelles yesterday which was organised by the great people at fo.am. I was invited to give a toast and did so on a course that was served with a plate from the Topoware collection. I thought I’d archive what I said.

Before I take a bite

I’m thinking about

- what i wish i hadn’t eaten yesterday
- what i will eat tomorrow
- the millions of obese children in the UK

- how i used to be able to carry a really heavy laptop around all the time
- how its so easy to get kids to exercise but not adults
- how many staircases will i have to go up and down to  burn this off?
- how I wished we weren’t so addicted to elevators and escalators

- how i should make an effort to eat more locally
- i hope the people involved in picking this food were well treated
- i hope the food miles of this meal aren’t too high
- how much of this will end up being thrown away
- could i have grown it myself?
- how much did this cost?

-  how many calories this is anyway
- i wonder if the ingredients list is lying
- is this part of my 5 a day?
- is this too much? not enough?
- how much salt is in this?
- how much sugar is in this?
- what kind of vitamins am i getting from this?
- am i equipped to digest this?

- how my mother told me its not polite to leave food in your plate
- how certain foods stopped being part of my diet after childhood
- how I can still remember my mom’s chicken sauce recipe just by thinking about it

And then I take a sip and take a bite and let my tongue do the thinking for me.

Tasty Thinking take 2 (because Blogger sucks)

November 9, 2006

Ok so after a first introduction I’m retracting and making a second announcement: Dave and I concluded that Blogger sucks and put together Tastythinking on WordPress instead. So basically it’s a blog about food, health, weird food related services, dieting and everything unique we can collect around those broad topics… if you have some ideas send them along to alex at tastythinking dot come ; )

Fresh Start online

September 14, 2006

Finally Fresh Start is online! Nearly 2 years after the initial (7 weeks) project we’ve been working hard to present this to the Emergence poster sessionin Pittsburgh and Dave went and also live-blogged the event. Loads of interesting thoughts.

Illustrating a service design process

September 1, 2006

I wont be attending Emergence but I had the pleasure on working on illustrating our design process for the poster session where Fresh Start will be presented and i suddenly found it a fascinating exercise. How do you represent what starts out by being boxes and arrows and make it compelling? I had to think about the flow of the process for one. We went through some design steps that influenced the way we analyzed prior assumptions (so the loop) and iterative processes around core design elements (around experience prototyping for example) that completely shaped the final product. So I tried to convey the dynamic essence of that process without losing sight of the visual flow i wanted to keep, i.e. some respect of a left to right, top to bottom way of reading.
So what i came up with eventually was reshaped because we had a lot of copy to include for each step as well as pictures, but i still really like the visual illustration of 7 weeks of hard work, that solely focuses on process and not on detailing the service. On an academic level it’s really interesting and worthwhile.

The final poster version will be present at the conference of course, but consider this the teaser ;)
