Tiny Useful Things: Radio Cards

January 24, 2011

I did a bit of Olympics-related media thinking for a client last month and it dawned on me that the most interesting thing about that 2 weeks will be the social and cultural gap that athletes and their entourage will have to deal with, not to mention the millions of tourists. How do you make the whole experience of living in England for a short amount of time less troubling. Often, when you visit a place for a short while, you accept the cultural differences, but some of these people will be here for months, training before the events. Linguistics is not that much of a challenge and something like Point it will do a basic job. But how do you explain simple everyday things like: what should I listen to in the morning?

Radio Cards are a little set of cards attached to the aerial of a radio to remind you of the major UK radio stations.

Just a friendly tiny useful thing. It took me about 2 years before I started listening to Radio 4 and I sometimes switch to a classical channel (not sure which) when I can’t fall asleep. I had to look up the other stations for this. Radio is a funny old thing, a thing of habit. To an English person, this will make no sense because it is assumed you know these things, but from a foreigner’s perspective, every little helps.

Minimizing regrets & new beginnings

January 14, 2011

So yeh, you might have read, Tinker closed. Unlike people who leave large corporate jobs and write a final farewell blogpost, I’m at loss for what would be appropriate to say here seeing as I co-founded the thing. I like What Jeff Bezos said:

” I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried. I knew that that would haunt me every day, and so, when I thought about it that way it was an incredibly easy decision. And, I think that’s very good. If you can project yourself out to age 80 and sort of think, “What will I think at that time?” it gets you away from some of the daily pieces of confusion. You know, I left this Wall Street firm in the middle of the year. When you do that, you walk away from your annual bonus. That’s the kind of thing that in the short-term can confuse you, but if you think about the long-term then you can really make good life decisions that you won’t regret later.”

It’s been an incredible adventure, in ways I can only start to process. Maybe there’s a little book there. Maybe not. But for now, i’m back to freelancing, which is strange and enjoyable too, a plan at a human scale.

Spread the word!

Week marks

January 7, 2011

Cheeky take on weeknotes, and in light of the fact i’m not really sure about digital bookmarks in their available form.

Some people’s PhDs are really cool. “My recently completed PhD thesis focused on the role of women in driving dining change.” I’m interested in how cooking and tech never really seem to work as per Intel’s “smart kitchen counter” that I would never use.
Also found a really nice recipe book writing conference that took place in 2008. They don’t seem to have filmed it though…shame for an archeology-based conference.

I’m a little obsessed with The September Issue at the moment. I really like Anna Wintour, basically because she’s very English and terrifies the Americans. Also because it’s about the job of running a newspaper which looks like a total nightmare.

Been reading Watching the English and want to do a comic-strip for it. I saw a brilliant exhibition last summer in Paris on Architecture and Comics and bought to catalogue, so will pour over that I think.
