Trans vs Inter

Transmedia, transdisciplinary, etc.. are clearly a fashionable expression but really…

“Trans is a Latin noun or prefix, meaning “across”, “beyond” or “on the opposite side”.”

“Inter is a Latin prefix meaning “between”, among, or “within a group”.”

Same difference? Not? Dunno but it’s bugging me.

  1. It should bug you because not only does it sound incredibly empty and sloganeering, but generally anyone using these words usually has got something to prove.

  2. Without wanting to dignify unnecessary neologisms that are more trendy than they are useful… “trans” implies to me more of a distinct entity rather than communication between entities.

I’m reminded of a quote from William Gisbon “not so much multi-national as post-geographic”.
